Dopo essere sopravvissuto a un incidente ferroviario, Ashoke (Irrfan Khan) cambia la sua personale visione della vita; inizia a viaggiare - prima in Inghilterra e poi in America - e torna in India solo per sposare secondo la tradizione bengalese una giovane donna scelta dai genitori. Ashima (Tabu) decide che è l'uomo per lei ancor prima di conoscerlo, nel momento in cui prova le sue eleganti scarpe europee lasciate nell'atrio, e con qualche timore, ma piena di speranze, lascia la patria e il calore della famiglia per seguire il marito a New York. Nonostante i contrasti climatici e culturali, Ashima trova conforto nel compagno che imparerà ad amare e rispettare. Alla nascita del primogenito i due giovani sposi lo chiamano Gogol, in onore dello scrittore russo al quale Ashoke imputa la sua salvezza ("Il cappotto" di Nikolaj Gogol è il pretesto per creare il legame tra padre e figlio sul quale si basa il film tratto dal romanzo omonimo di Jhumpa Lahiri).
